Why Understanding Yarn Matters More Than You Think

In knitwear design, we often focus on stitch, structure, silhouette, and colour — but the real foundation is the yarn itself.

Two fabrics knitted on the same machine, gauge, and structure can behave completely differently because of yarn properties. Understanding yarn helps you :

Predict fabric behaviour
Improve garment performance
Make better development decisions
Communicate clearly with mills & technicians

1️⃣ Yarn Twist in Flat Knitting

Yarn twist affects stitch clarity, stability, drape, pilling, and skewing.
When fibres are twisted :

Yarn becomes stronger and more compact

Hairiness reduces

Stitch appearance becomes clearer

Fabric behaviour becomes more controlled

Low vs High Twist

Low twist: soft, lofty, warm → but more pilling, lower clarity

High twist: crisp, stable, durable → but less soft and more structured

👉 Twist level directly defines the final fabric “personality”.

2️⃣ S-Twist vs Z-Twist

Twist direction is a hidden cause of fabric skew and torque in flat knitting.

Z-twist: most common, standard industry use
S-twist: opposite direction, less common

When combined with knitting direction, twist can cause :

Fabric rotation
Skewing
Spiralling after wash
Industry solution:
Balanced systems like:
S-twist singles + Z-twist plying or vice versa

👉 This improves stability and reduces torque issues.

3️⃣ Woollen Spun vs Worsted Spun

Same fibre, completely different fabric outcome.

Woollen Spun

Fibres randomly arranged
Air trapped → warm & bulky
Soft, rustic, lightweight
More pilling, less clarity

👉 Best for chunky, cosy knitwear

Worsted Spun

Fibres aligned and combed
Smooth, strong, clean surface
Sharp stitch definition
Better durability

👉 Best for fine gauge & luxury knitwear

4️⃣ Yarn Count (Nm / Ne / Tex)

Yarn count defines thickness and machine suitability.

Nm / Ne: higher number = finer yarn
Tex: higher number = thicker yarn

Why it matters :

Controls gauge selection
Impacts drape & weight
Affects fabric detail & performance

Example guide :

Fine yarn → more detail, slower knitting
Coarse yarn → faster production, bulkier look

5️⃣ Plied vs Single Yarn

Yarn construction affects stability and durability.

Single yarn :

Soft, natural, lightweight
More pilling and less stability

Plied yarn :

Stronger and more balanced
Better stitch definition and recovery
Reduced pilling

👉 Single = softness
👉 Plied = performance & structure

6️⃣ Yarn Hairiness

Hairiness = fibre ends on yarn surface.

Impact :

High hairiness → machine friction, pilling, blurred stitches
Low hairiness → clean surface, sharp fabric, better clarity

But also design value. Hairiness can create :

Soft halo effects
Brushed luxury textures
Cozy aesthetic surfaces

👉 It is both a technical risk and a desig
